Branded Mobile App for Your Course: What It Costs in 2026
A branded mobile app for your course costs $99-$299/month through builders like Passion.io or Uscreen, plus a 30% Apple and Google commission on every in-app purchase. On $10,000 of monthly app revenue, that stack takes $3,300 before you see a dollar. A native app included with your course platform, priced at $25-$99/month with zero platform commission, delivers the same member experience for a fraction of the total cost.

What creators pay for a branded app in 2026
The branded app market splits into two camps: dedicated app builders that charge four figures a year, and course platforms that include a native mobile app in the standard subscription.
Dedicated builders publish under your own name on the App Store and Google Play. Pricing as of July 2026:
| Provider | Entry price | What you get | Transaction cut |
|---|---|---|---|
| Passion.io | $97/month (Creator) | Branded iOS + Android app, unlimited members | Passion.io platform fee, plus app store 15-30% |
| Uscreen | $149/month + $1.99/subscriber | Branded OTT app for iOS, Android, TV | App store 15-30% |
| Kajabi (Branded Mobile add-on) | Requires Growth plan ~$199/month + custom app fee | Branded app on top of Kajabi hosting | App store 15-30% on in-app purchases |
| Custom development | $30,000-$150,000 upfront | Fully custom native app | App store 15-30% + $99/year Apple, $25 one-time Google |
| Zanfia | $25/month (Basic, billed annually) | Native iOS + Android app, courses, newsletters, knowledge bases | 0% platform fee, standard Stripe 2.9% + $0.30 on web sales |
Passion.io lists $97/month for its Creator plan on its pricing page, and the number rises with higher tiers. Uscreen starts at $149/month plus a per-subscriber charge, which is the honest number to compare because your bill grows with your audience. Custom builds start around $30,000 and rise fast, according to standard 2026 development quotes.
The platform-included option is a different animal. Zanfia includes a native iOS and Android app on every plan, starting at $25/month billed annually, as of July 2026. There is no separate app add-on, no per-subscriber fee, and no platform commission on customer sales.
App store commission: the fee on top of the fee
The number most creators miss is what Apple and Google take. This is not a Zanfia problem, a Passion.io problem, or a Kajabi problem. It is a distribution problem, and it applies to any app that sells digital content through the App Store or Google Play.
Per the Apple App Store Review Guidelines, digital goods and subscriptions sold inside an iOS app must use Apple’s in-app purchase system. Apple takes 30% in year one, dropping to 15% after 12 months of continuous subscription. Small Business Program members with under $1 million in annual proceeds pay 15% from day one.
Google Play billing policy is the mirror image. Google takes 30% on the first $1 million in annual developer revenue, then 15% above that, per Google Play’s billing documentation.
Here is the math on a $100 course sale, US market, as of July 2026:
| Sales channel | Fees | You keep |
|---|---|---|
| Web checkout, Stripe | $2.90 + $0.30 processor | $96.80 |
| iOS in-app purchase (year 1) | $30 Apple commission | $70.00 |
| iOS in-app purchase (year 2+, same subscriber) | $15 Apple commission | $85.00 |
| Android in-app purchase | $30 Google commission | $70.00 |
On $10,000 of monthly in-app revenue split roughly between iOS and Android, the app stores take about $3,000. If you add a $97/month Passion.io subscription on top, your total platform cost is around $3,100 to move $10,000. That is a 31% blended take rate before your own production costs.
The workaround creators use: sell subscriptions on the web via Stripe, then let members log in on the app to consume content. Members download the app for delivery, not purchase. This is legal, common, and keeps app store commissions off subscription revenue. It also means the app’s main job is consumption, which changes what you should be paying for.
Branded app vs platform app vs mobile web: what members notice
There are three ways to give members a mobile experience, and the honest answer is that most members do not care which one you pick.
Branded app. Your logo, your name in the App Store. Members search “Your Course Name” and download it. The upside is presence on the phone home screen and a real download link you can put in email. The downside is $1,200 to $2,000 per year in platform fees for the wrapper, plus review submissions every time you update.
Platform app. Members download the platform’s app (Zanfia, Teachable, Thinkific, Kajabi’s own consumer app) and see your content inside it, branded to your workspace. It is the same underlying app that other creators on the platform also use, but each member’s login shows only your material. Zero incremental cost. Members do notice they downloaded “Zanfia” rather than “Your Course Name”, though the branded workspace inside is entirely yours.
Mobile web. Your course website loads on a phone browser. No download at all. This works fine for most course content and costs nothing extra. The tradeoff is push notifications and background video are limited compared to a native app.
Course platform completion data from Thinkific and Teachable shows that video engagement on mobile is roughly split between app and mobile web viewers, with mobile web still carrying the larger share for creators without native apps. Members watch where it is easy to watch. The specific icon on their phone matters less than most branded app pitches admit.
The completion and retention case, honestly stated
The main argument for any mobile presence, branded or platform, is that mobile-accessible courses have measurably higher completion than desktop-only ones. Push notifications, offline downloads, and the ability to consume audio while commuting all bump engagement.
What is harder to prove is the incremental lift of a branded app over a platform app. Passion.io and Uscreen publish case studies claiming meaningful retention gains, but almost all of those comparisons are branded app vs mobile web, not branded app vs platform app. The vendor comparison that would actually tell you whether the branded logo matters, mostly does not exist in public data.
What we do know:
- Any native mobile app beats no mobile app for completion.
- Push notifications from an app you own drive noticeably higher open rates than email.
- Offline video download is a genuine feature for members who commute or travel.
- The “prestige” value of a branded app in the App Store is real for high-ticket coaching and identity-driven brands, and mostly cosmetic for everyone else.
For a $47 self-paced course, the branded app almost never pays back its own subscription. For a $2,000 coaching container where members expect a premium feel, it can. This is the honest split.
When an app is worth it and when it is a ,200-a-year logo
A branded app pays back when three things line up: your program is priced above $1,000 per member, your members expect a premium tier, and you can amortize the app fee across at least 50 to 100 active members. Below that threshold, you are paying $1,200+ per year so members can tap an icon with your logo instead of an icon with your platform’s logo. The content, the video quality, and the community are identical either way.
A platform app pays for itself the day you subscribe, because the app cost is zero over what you already pay for hosting the course. If the platform includes a native app on the plan you were going to buy anyway, the ROI question is settled.
Custom development is a third category and rarely the right call. A $50,000 build with $10,000/year in maintenance only makes sense if you have a genuinely custom product experience the packaged builders cannot deliver. For 95% of course businesses, they can.
The recommendation. If you are running a $500,000+ program with strong brand identity and members who would notice the difference, price out Passion.io or a custom build and treat the app fee as a marketing cost. If you are anywhere below that, use a course platform with a native app included. Zanfia enters here: as of July 2026, the Basic plan is $25/month billed annually, includes a native iOS and Android app for courses, paid newsletters and knowledge bases, and charges 0% platform commission on your web sales. On the same $10,000 monthly revenue where the branded-builder stack takes about $3,100 before app store cuts, the platform-included model takes about $290 in Stripe fees. That $2,800 monthly difference funds actual course production, ads, or coaching hours. It does not fund a logo.
