Marketing consent: who gets a campaign
Email campaigns, segments included, go only to people who agreed to your emails. How to confirm consent people gave you outside Zanfia, how an import asks about consent, and when to send a service message.
An email campaign goes only to people who agreed to receive emails from you, whether you send it to all subscribed or to a segment. This article explains who gets a campaign, what to do when the consent came from outside Zanfia, what a contact import asks, and when to send a service message to everyone.
Who gets a campaign
A campaign reaches clients with the Subscribed status. A client has it after signing up through a form, ticking the marketing consent at checkout, or when their consent was confirmed in Zanfia with a reason. Every way to subscribe is listed in Subscribers, unsubscribes and blocked addresses.
The same rule applies to All subscribed and to every segment, for example a tag or the buyers of a product. People in a segment without consent, such as buyers who did not tick the consent at checkout or contacts imported without consent, do not get the campaign. Unsubscribed and Pending confirmation clients do not get it either.
When the chosen segment holds people without consent, the campaign editor shows a warning with their number in the Recipients card, for example 12 people in this segment have not agreed to your e-mails and will not get this campaign. The recipient count under the Audience field already counts only people with consent.
You have their consent from outside Zanfia
Consent can come another way: from a previous mailing list, at purchase, or from a direct request. You can then confirm it right in the campaign.
Open the warning in the campaign
In the campaign editor, in the Recipients card, click I have their consent in the warning about people without consent. The Why? link next to it opens this article.
Pick the reason
In the subscribe window, answer Why can you email them?: Imported from another mailing list, Existing customers who consented, They asked directly or Other reason. Use Details to describe where the consent came from; with Other reason the field is required.
Save
Click Subscribe. The people from the segment without consent get the Subscribed status, and the campaign's count of people without consent and its recipient count refresh.
The reason and the details are stored on each person, so the Marketing consent card on the client's profile always shows where the consent came from. The window covers only people whose consent was never captured: nobody who unsubscribed or did not confirm a signup by email is subscribed this way. The button is shown to people allowed to manage campaigns.
Importing contacts
When you import in Customers → Import customers, on the Upload CSV, Paste and Add manually tabs, a required question appears: Do you have these people's consent to your marketing e-mails?.
| Answer | What happens |
|---|---|
| Yes, they agreed to receive e-mails from me | You pick a reason from the same list as above. The imported contacts get the Subscribed status with your reason and can get campaigns right away. The import summary shows how many were subscribed. |
| No, or I don't know | The contacts come in without consent. They get no campaigns until they sign up through a form or you confirm their consent with a reason. Service messages still reach them. |
An import never subscribes Unsubscribed clients again. You can also confirm the consent of contacts already in your base on the customers list: select them, click Edit selected and choose Subscribe to marketing emails.
Service message
Some information your customers must get even without marketing consent: a data breach, a change of your terms, a cancelled event. That is what a service message is for. It is available on every plan, including plans without email campaigns.
On the Marketing → Email campaigns list, open the ▾ arrow next to New campaign and choose Service message. On a plan without email campaigns, the same page shows a Write a service message button. The message opens in the same editor as a campaign, with an orange Service message tag.
- Audience: All contacts (except the unsubscribed) by default; you can pick a segment instead. The notice reaches everyone in the audience except people who unsubscribed from all your emails and blocked addresses. Message-type opt-outs do not apply.
- Content: information only. No offers, discounts or product promotion, because the notice also reaches people without marketing consent.
- Footer: the unsubscribe link in the footer unsubscribes from all your emails.
- Limit: the notice counts toward your monthly email volume like any campaign.
In Customers → History → Emails the send shows Service message in the Source column, and the campaigns list marks it with an orange tag.
Good to know
Before you send a campaign to a segment, check the Recipients card for the number of people without consent. If their consent is on your side, confirm it with I have their consent; if not, leave them out of the campaign.
